Curtain Measurement Guide
Find the Perfect Fit for Your Windows
Choosing the right size curtains is key to a beautiful and polished look. Our handcrafted crewel curtains are an investment in your home’s aesthetic, so we want to ensure you get the perfect fit. Follow this simple guide to measure your windows correctly.
Step 1: Measure the Width
- Determine Where to Place Your Rod: Start by deciding where your curtain rod will be. We recommend placing the rod at least 4-6 inches (10-15 cm) beyond the window frame on each side. This allows the curtains to stack back and gives the illusion of a wider window.
- Measure the Rod, Not the Window: Measure the entire width of your curtain rod (or the space you plan to hang it), excluding any decorative finials.
- For Proper Fullness: To achieve the luxurious, gathered look that shows off the artistry of our crewel embroidery, you’ll need curtains with a combined width that is at least 2 to 2.5 times the width of your rod.
- Example: If your rod is 50 inches wide, you will need curtains with a total width of 100-125 inches. This could be a single panel that is 100 inches wide or two panels, each 50-62.5 inches wide.
Step 2: Measure the Length
- Measure from the Rod Down: Measure the length from the top of your curtain rod to where you want the bottom of the curtain to fall.
- Choose Your Preferred Length:
- “Sill Length”: The curtain hangs to the bottom of the window sill. This is a practical choice for small windows.
- “Below Sill”: The curtain hangs 4-6 inches (10-15 cm) below the window sill. This is a common and versatile option.
- “Floor Length”: The curtain hangs just above the floor, about 1/2 to 1 inch (1-2.5 cm) off the ground. This creates a clean, tailored look.
- “Puddle Length”: The curtain is long enough to “puddle” on the floor, adding a dramatic and elegant feel. For this look, add 2-6 inches (5-15 cm) to your floor-length measurement, depending on how much “puddle” you desire.
